Course Description

This course provides a critical survey of the field new media studies and communications. It begins with thinking about the individual as living in a fast-changing new media ecology; it then examines the political-economic and cultural aspects of new media as they develop in contemporary societies such as the U.S. and mainland China. The course will introduce students to some leading research as well as creative works on new media developments, in order to explore the role of new media and media practices in modern life. Through lectures, presentations, writing assignments and discussions, the course will help students build the terms and concepts used in media analysis in both oral and written English. Regarding the open and developing nature of the field of new media, the class will adopt a lecture-discussion format to emphasize critical thinking and communication skills for our students.


Course Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to

· Analyze new media development beyond technological determinism reflecting scholarly positions;

· Create essays/presentations examining new media in relation to a chosen field (news-making, surveillance, Intellectual Property Rights, etc.);

· Apply critical perspectives to assess the role of new media in the local and global societies;

· Identify key elements of new media theory texts.

  1. RMB5,000 for UIC, HKBU and HKCHC students;

  2. RMB7,500 for the students from other colleges/ universities.


Accomodation Fee

  1. UIC students (Non-graduates): RMB10/ Person/ Day

  2. UIC graduates: RMB60/ Person/ Day

  3. HKBU, HKCHC and other students: RMB60/ Person/ Day


Note: the standard fee for summer accommodation in student hostel for 2025 is subject to final confirmation.
