Course Description
This course aims at giving students an orientation on the evolution of various media technology and how it shapes our socio-cultural life, and the ever-changing landscape of mass communication. The history is complimented by concrete cases on contemporary issues concerning the globalized mode of the production and consumption of media and media culture. By the end of the course, students will have a better understanding on how messages are conveyed through different media and the impacts on mediated communication when different technology is applied. Students will also be able to apply the media aesthetics theories and utilize media technologies to explain socio-cultural issues in the everyday life with the media.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to
· Identify the fundamentals of media literacy and the evolutions of key media industries;
· Describe the core issues relating to the globalization of communication and global media and the role of technological development;
· Explain social and cultural issues in various contexts of media and how these issues interact with the media process and affect the outcomes of media;
· Elaborate on media aesthetics theories, including lighting, color frame, composition, and the television language (sight, sound, and motion).
