Course Description
This course aims to equip students with skills in strategic translation and trans-editing of journalistic and public relations content between Chinese and English in a multimedia, globalized, and AI-integrated media landscape. The course introduces the application of translation theories, principles, and strategies in the media industry, explores the potentials and limitations of AI-generated translation, and highlights the value of human translators’ input in achieving accurate, customary, culturally sensitive, and impactful communication across linguistic barriers. It emphasizes the role of trans-editing as a more creative adaptation to make content culturally relevant and engaging for target audiences.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to
· Evaluate the effectiveness of translation strategies commonly adopted in current journalistic and public relations endeavors and AI-generated translation.;
· Create Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chinese trans-edited journalistic content by applying appropriate translation strategies;
· Create Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chinese trans-edited public relations content by applying appropriate translation strategies;
· Examine media translation practitioners’ role in a globalized, AI-powered media landscape.
