Course Description

This course examines representations of journalists and journalism in the popular culture, focusing on TV and film. The secondary emphasis will be on the influences on different types of journalism (i.e. investigative reporting, war reporting, political journalism), different issues in journalism (i.e. objectivity, ethics, Fourth Estate role, sensationalism, commercialism, whistleblowing), and how gender, sexuality, nationality, and ethnicity inform journalistic practice. 

Through lectures, written assignments, discussions, and presentations, students will learn how to analyze and discuss the representations of news media professionals, journalists’ reactions to those representations, and the possible effects on the public toward the various roles that journalists play.


Course Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to

· Examine the different roles that journalists play in society;

· Examine and describe the thematic influences (war, gender, etc) on journalistic practice;

· Critically analyze the representations of journalists in popular culture.

  2. RMB7,500 for the students from other colleges/ universities.

  2. BNBU graduates: RMB60/ Person/ Day

  3. HKBU, HKCHC and other students: RMB60/ Person/ Day
