Course Description

The aim of this course is to develop music listening skills and appreciation of music from around the world. Students will study various musical genres focusing on music in a global context and will be able to identify: (i) the essential differences and overlapping similarities of the elements of the world’s music; and (ii) organizing principles of these musical elements by affective listening. Students will recognise and identify the music of many cultures. Major objectives are to distinguish given music genres, and to comprehend the roles and functions of music in the world.


Course Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to

· Identify music instruments, styles, genres, textures, and elements of world music;

· Develop aural skills and distinguish selected examples of music from East Asia, South East Asia, India, Europe, Africa and Latin America followed by styles, genres, and specific works;

· Examine and discuss specific styles and pieces of world music both in writing and in oral presentation.

  1. BNBU students (Non-graduates): RMB10/ Person/ Day

  2. BNBU graduates: RMB60/ Person/ Day

  3. HKBU, HKCHC and other students: RMB60/ Person/ Day
