Course Description

The course aims to develop critical thinking skills in analysing media in an evolving, convergent realm through critical media and communication theories. Students will be engaged in analysing news media production practices and influences using the relevant theories. Seen through the lens of these theories students better learn how news media impacts society. By applying these theories, students will gain experience as reflective and self-critical media practitioners.


Course Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to

· Examine the role that media plays in our everyday lives.

· Apply theories about culture, technology, globalization, and media production to contemporary examples.

· Evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, and applicability of different media and communication theories.

· Explain the basic arguments behind different media and communication theories.

· Identify key elements of communication theory texts

Course Fee

  1. RMB5,000 for UIC, HKBU and HKCHC students;

  2. RMB7,500 for the students from other colleges/ universities.


Accomodation Fee

  1. UIC students (Non-graduates): RMB10/ Person/ Day

  2. UIC graduates: RMB60/ Person/ Day

  3. HKBU, HKCHC and other students: RMB60/ Person/ Day


Note: the standard fee for summer accommodation in student hostel for 2025 is subject to final confirmation.
