Course Description

This course introduces students to the history of architecture and architectural civilizations through the lens of popular fantasy films and TV series, including Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, works by Hayao Miyazaki, and Game of Thrones. Designed for students with limited prior exposure to Western civilization or the visual language of historical architecture, the course uses fantasy media as an engaging entry point into architectural concepts. By analyzing architectural forms, urban design, and cultural symbolism in these media, students explore how fantasy worlds are inspired by real-world historical precedents, from antiquity to the early modern era. The course emphasizes that architecture, with its historical roots, aesthetic qualities, and spatial character, serves as a distinct visual language. This language actively shapes the atmosphere and narrative direction within stories. The course fosters connections between architectural history, cultural identity, and civilizational history across Western and Eastern traditions. It encourages critical thinking about the built environment in both fictional and real-world contexts. This approach not only deepens students’ understanding of architectural history but also inspires creative applications of architectural knowledge in storytelling and everyday life.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

· Identify key architectural styles, functions, and aesthetics of different eras across Western and Eastern civilizations;
