Course Description

This is a studio course; accordingly, there will be several studio assignments of multiple components: research, process evidence, written and oral explanations, and the design product. Each project should produce a solution to a defined design problem that addresses a fundamental aspect of design. The specific design problem will be left to the discretion of the instructor, but will focus on applying aspects of design to solve the defined problem in a creative and unique way.

Critiques will follow each assignment in which students are expected to articulate their design decisions and critique their own work as well as their classmates.

Suggested assignment criteria are as follows:

1. Static media, use of design elements and principles: line, shape, size, space, colour, texture, value, balance, contrast, emphasis, unity, pattern, rhythm, movement.

2. Static Media which combines 2D and 3D characteristics.

3. Sequential Design: planning a visual hierarchy with variety and unity.

4. Time-based Media: timing, using subject matter to relate content.

5. Interactive Media: usability, combined written and visual content, text and image.


Course Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

· Identify and apply the elements and principles of design to solve design problems

· Order visual elements according to a hierarchy;

· Relate content through subject matter selection;

· Combine pictorial and written communication effectively;

· Discuss design critically with the ability to articulate complex ideas using professional terminology.

A student who is currently studying for a bachelor degree.

Course Fee

  1. RMB5,000 for UIC, HKBU and HKCHC students;

  2. RMB7,500 for the students from other colleges/ universities.


Accomodation Fee

  1. UIC students (Non-graduates): RMB10/ Person/ Day

  2. UIC graduates: RMB60/ Person/ Day

  3. HKBU, HKCHC and other students: RMB60/ Person/ Day


Note: The standard fee for summer accommodation in student hostel for 2025 is subject to final confirmation.
